What need is addressed by this program?

This program will assist parents to:

This client-centered program is for parents of infants and pre-school children who require support or counselling as they adjust to the knowledge that their child is blind or has low vision, as diagnosed by an Ophthalmologist. The therapist provides supportive counselling and can help to connect you and your family with the service providers you wish to meet, and will connect you with other community agencies to help ensure that all of your needs as a family are met. This program provides brief counselling supports to families in an office or home based setting.

What will this program help me achieve?

This program will assist parents to:

• develop a greater understanding of their strengths and challenges of having a child that is blind or has low vision.
• learn tools and strategies to manage their feelings surrounding their child’s diagnosis
• learn tools and strategies to best support their child with identified challenges and overall functioning
• become aware of available community and other resources

What are the major service activities of the program?

The Blind Low Vision Program involves 3 major service activities as follows:

1. An initial assessment period to establish client needs and goals

2. Family Counselling Support

3. Integrated services with the Simcoe County Early Intervention Services providers

• Counselling is provided by a Child and Family Therapist

• Services are free of charge to families for individual and family counselling
